The Internet of Things Security Institute releases an Security Framework for Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure.

Alan Mihalic President of the IoTSI says the objective is to provide frameworks that can be implemented from the base build through to the build completion.

MELBOURNE, VIC, AUSTRALIA, February 17, 2019 / — The Internet of Things Security Institute (IoTSI) announced today that it has released an IoT Security Framework for Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure under a Common Criteria Licence agreement.

“The goal of the IoT security Institute is to establish a comprehensive set of guidelines to help each of the supply chain participants specify, procure, install, integrate, operate and maintain IoT securely in Buildings, Smart Precincts and Cities. This includes intelligent buildings equipment and controls such as audio visual (AV), fire, HVAC, lighting and building security.

“Buildings are working spaces, information portals and community information exchanges that require appropriate security controls to meet their future potential. The IoT Security Institute is focused on ensuring that recommendations produced are globally applicable and simple to adopt – fitting within existing processes wherever possible. To achieve this, the IoTSI opens the channels of communication between building occupiers, facilities managers, engineers, designers and urban planners in relation to the cyber security and privacy challenges affecting building environments.” states Mihalic

In a Smart Cities age, this includes maintaining data confidentiality, privacy and public safety levels that meet community and corporate expectations. This can only be achieved by a globally available Cyber Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure Framework.
The release of the IoTSI Framework provides business, government and industry a publically available framework capable of addressing emerging and existing IoT security challenges within the built environment. Released under a Common Criteria licensing agreement the IoTSI framework can be implemented without licensing costs or additional charges.

“We did not want to restrict framework adoption by imposing licensing costs or restricted access pending some kind of commercial consideration. The framework is there to be implemented and shared. Often the benefits of such initiatives get
lost in the commercial requirements imposed. The IoTSI does not even charge membership dues. We did not want to be caught up in forcing membership on order to participate. It too often drives many Not- For-Profit agendas. We simply and easily want to get the framework to cyber and privacy professionals where it is needed”. says Alan Mihalic
“Of course, there’ll be organizations that will provide professional services to assist with the Framework’s deployment. This is expected. Resource and competency considerations are always a determining factor to any cyber security or privacy process improvement activity. However, the Framework is not a commercial offering. That in itself goes a long way to keeping costs in check. Mihalic added.”
David Watts, Professor of Information Law and Policy at Latrobe University, former Victorian Privacy Commissioner and current member of the United Nations Global Pulse offered the following insight on emerging challenges facing IoT and how the IoT Security Institute is addressing those security challenges:
“The internet of things can enrich our lives and our societies but it’s vital that the risks it can pose to our fundamental freedoms are avoided. One of the key risks is security. Getting IoT privacy, security and ethics right from the outset is part of the important work that the IoTSI is undertaking through its ongoing program to develop a security framework for the [deployment of] IoT [technologies]. Crucially, this work is being developed through the efforts of organisations and individuals who are contributing a wide range of policy, technical, legal and consumer perspectives.”

About the Internet of Things Security Institute (IoTSI)
The Internet of Things Security Institute is a Not for Profit academic and industry body dedicated to providing frameworks and supporting educational services to assist in managing security within an Internet of Things eco-system. The IoTSI has developed an IoT Security Framework for Smart Cities and Critical Infrastructure, which will enable and facilitate the secure and safe deployment of IoT & IIOT Eco-Systems.
IoTSI is now inviting those with a specific interest in ensuring the safety and security of smart buildings and critical infrastructure, to get involved and help ensure the ongoing aims of the IoTSI are achieved. Interested parties can make direct contact by emailing;

Handcycling Across Japan for the Mental Health Care of the Surviving Children of Tohoku

Josh Shinton Charity Adventurer Nationwide Japan Hand-Cycling Challenge to Fundraise to Provide Mental Health Care for the Earthquake Tsunami Surviving Children

TOKYO, JAPAN, February 17, 2019 / — "Starting on March 11, charity adventurer Josh Stinton will start the long and grueling challenge of using only his arms to cross the entire length of Japan, starting in the far south and handcycling up to Cape Soya in the north of Hokkaido.

It’s not just an adventure. Josh is taking on this challenge to share the inspiring stories of resilience shown by the Japanese people during the country’s many natural disasters. Understanding that there are still many families in need of relief from the trauma brought on from various natural disasters, he is also raising awareness for a small Japanese-based charity called APRICOT CHILDREN.

Why March 11?

That’s when life changed for hundreds of thousands of people in Japan’s Tohoku region. And even though much of the visible debris from the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident of March 11, 2011 has been cleared away, there are still tender wounds remaining in the hearts and minds of many children and their families in Tohoku.

Whole family units, neighborhoods and entire communities were devastated by the event. This forced hundreds of thousands of children, mothers and their families to live in temporary housing units. Among these are the more than 71,000 children and mothers who have been evacuated from Fukushima Prefecture’s eastern districts. They have been scattered throughout Japan, many separated from their fathers, grandparents and friends.

In such unstable, impermanent and stressful circumstances children can be especially susceptible to intense anxiety, depression and in time PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome), the symptoms of which can take many years to manifest. Recent research surveys suggest 1 in 3 children in Tohoku are suffering from mental health issues. They need more help.

About Josh Stinton

Josh is a Charity Adventurer, taking on some of the hardest physical challenges around the world to raise funds and awareness for small charities. Having left his role in a "Big 4" consulting firm three years ago, he has redesigned his life dedicating his time and energy to these adventures with purpose. He now produces short form documentaries distributed across large media platforms to help charities tell their stories. 100% of all funds raised always goes directly to the charities supported.

Josh’s Japan journey is the fourth challenge he has taken on around the world, all with a desire to help a new small charity tell their story with each challenge. This is certainly going to be the hardest challenge yet and he asks that people follow the journey as he crosses the country (social media links below), and also reach out with stories of strength that they would like to see shared.

100% of all funds raised go directly to the APRICOT NPO to help the Japanese families in need.

Call to Media
If you would like to cover Josh’s journey or the work of APRICOT CHILDREN, we would be happy to help facilitate coverage. "Unreported: Learning to LIVE Free" Author Veera Mahajan Reveals How to Achieve and Maintain a Positive Mental Attitude, and How to Get Self-Discipline

If you are constantly getting bad results from the doing the same thing over and over, you have to stop being merely "optimistic," and be "realistic.”

— Veera Mahajan, author; "UNREPORTED: Learning to LIVE free"

MALIBU, CALIFORNIA , USA, February 17, 2019 / — Esteemed Author, Mediator, and Public Speaker; Veera Mahajan is one of Malibu’s most valued community leaders. The beautiful and intelligent woman is also author of the critically acclaimed book “Unreported: Learning to LIVE free," about recognizing and overcoming domestic abuse and stopping domestic violence. Veera Mahajan is also a highly praised Educator, Mediator, and Publisher, having created and published the landmark publication "Malibu Chronicle."

Veera did an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Sentinel recently, and the following is the second part of an excerpt of that highly valuable, important and educational discussion, concerning how to improve one's life through self-esteem, and a positive mental attitude.

Veera Mahajan; Exclusive Interview, Courtesy of The Hollywood Sentinel:

Hollywood Sentinel: You have stated that love is stronger thank hate. Please explain further why this is?

Veera Mahajan: It all starts with how much you love yourself. Since our childhood, we are taught to be nice to others and love others. Most of us are not taught or encouraged to love ourselves. Most of us never learned self care. Since the very beginning, we are made to feel bad about taking care of ourselves. We are told it is selfish if we think about our own happiness. So we learn to take care of other people and when we don’t get the care back, we start building resentment. We expect people we care about to care about us and when we don’t get it, we are disappointed and hate it. Hate makes us fight and be mean to each other. If we teach our children to love themselves, they will have better expectations from their relationships. We expect less than respect because we don’t love ourselves enough to believe that we deserve the best.

Hollywood Sentinel: That's powerful. What is the best way to get self-discipline?

Veera: The best way to get self-discipline is having a positive goal. Once you make a goal, it helps to make a plan and steps of how you are going to reach that goal. Have a ledger of constant positive growth steps you have taken to achieve the goal.

Losing Weight

For example; if the goal is to lose excess weight, you have to have a clear final weight goal. Come up with a plan for workout and healthy meals including foods and times. Then try to stick to the plan. If you make a mistake, it may take a few mess-ups before you can stick to the plan, but don’t give up. Keep an eye on the goal. It helps to have a visual reminder, like keeping a skinny picture of yourself or someone else you would like to look like when you reach the goal. Periodically weigh yourself to make sure you are staying on track and not going too far off the goal in the opposite direction. Don’t buy clothes in bigger sizes. Be uncomfortable in smaller clothes till you fit in them comfortably. When you reach your mark; Hooray! You stayed disciplined and you attained your goal.

Hollywood Sentinel: That's great. do you feel it is always important to be optimistic? Why or why not?

Veera: It is definitely important to be optimistic most of the time. When you or anyone is working hard and smart towards any goal and you have setbacks on the way, it is good to stay optimistic and not give up. You learn from your mistake of what not to do, and what to do next time until you reach your goal.

But, if you are constantly getting bad results from doing the same thing over and over, you have to stop being merely "optimistic," and be "realistic," and realize that "doing the same things in the same way and expecting different result is insanity," and find something else to do. Just like living with an abuser, who keeps promising to try and be better next time, buys another time for them to keep hurting you, you need to stop being simply "optimistic," see things for what they are, and make the change.

Hollywood Sentinel: I love it. What is the best way to achieve and maintain a positive mental attitude?

Veera: A healthy mind, and a healthy body! Taking care of your physical health by regular workout's and maintaining healthy eating habits will make you feel better about yourself. Feeling good about yourself is very important for making sure you respect yourself in all aspects of your life, whether it is in business or personal situations. Taking care of your physical self lets you see the positive results. Once you learn that positive things happen with healthy habits, it teaches you to build a healthy and positive attitude towards everything else you do in life. So, I think to maintain a positive attitude; maintain a healthy body. It takes a positive self-image and positive mental attitude to maintain good physical health.

He Said: “My Bootie Floats With The BackBone Wedge”

Owner & CEO BackBone Wedge

Gwen With Her Brother Using The BackBone Wedge

The BackBone Wedge Even Helped Fritz In His Recovery!

Gwen Jewell is the CEO & Founder of the Backbone Wedge, a revolutionary new wedge that prevents bedsores that is changing lives for people who are immobile.

Get a couple BackBone Wedges to elevate both sides of your body to feel like you’re floating in space. Also be sure to check out her heel protectors and other products that are available.”

— Eric Thomas Patrick, BackBone Wedge Client

REDWOOD CITY, CA, USA, February 16, 2019 / — With the prevalence of pressure sores at an all time epidemic high in the United States, millions of people are looking for a way to prevent and treat this horrible condition.

Billions of dollars are spent every year to prevent pressure sore, yet still more than 2.5 million people will develop them each year and over 60,000 of those people will die as a consequence of complications resulting from them.

A pressure sore is localized injury to skin and/or underlying tissue that can extend down to the bone, and it results from sustained pressure particularly in patients who need to stay in bed or immobile for periods of time.

Eric Thomas Patrick, a spinal cord injury patient and client of Gwen’s BackBone Wedge says that regular wedges that you can buy “for super cheap, super suck”. They are “hard and don’t maintain their shape”.

The problem with most wedges is that they tend to become hard after 15 minutes. So the initial pressure relief becomes pressure inducing on the exact location of the pressure sore. More pressure on the pressure sore is exactly why they are very difficult to manage and treat. In response to the pressure, patients start twisting and turning whatever way they can trying to get comfortable again.

This can be hard on caregivers who feel they are constantly assisting their loved ones find the right position.

In addition, traditional wedges tend to push patients to a steep angle, which causes pressure on the bony prominences of the opposite side of the body. This can lead to new pressure sores in various locations.

The BackBone Wedge is different because there is zero pressure touching the pressure sore. As Eric says “My bootie floats with the BackBone Wedge!” And just as importantly, the BackBone Wedge doesn’t force you into an awkward angle. The BackBone Wedge easily slips under the patient, allowing the coccyx area (the bony prominence at the end of the spine and the area most likely to develop a pressure sore) to float in the air.

Patients love it because it gives them a sense of security knowing there is zero pressure on their pressure sore, and caregivers love it because they now reposition the patient less frequently than they used to.

And if that weren’t enough all on its own, Gwen Jewell, who herself is a wound care nurse and hospital lead of the pressure injury prevention program, the BackBone Wedge has an antimicrobial covering that can be easily cleaned.

Have you ever seen drainage from a pressure wound soak through a flimsy pillow cover and absorb into a wedge or pillow? It’s disgusting, and more than that, it’s a petri dish of infection. Infection is the dreaded complication of pressure sores that all patients and caregivers fear. Christopher Reeves, best known for his role as Superman, died from cardiac collapse and arrest which was a direct result of an infection from his pressure sore.

Gwen’s quest to create the perfect wedge is not only motivated by her love of her patients, but its personal too. Gwen’s father developed complications from a pressure sore while he was in the hospital, and Gwen’s brother has a spinal cord injury, so she is always on the lookout for reddened skin and ways to prevent pressure sores.

Gwen found various types of foam wedges, gel pods, air mattresses, alarm technology and pillows that either weren’t helpful, weren’t available in the community or weren’t able to adequately reduce pressure and a clean environment at the site of injury. Both her father and brother inspired her to find something better on the market.

Other technologies are out there that are used in the hospital setting that can tell nurses when it’s time to turn a patient, but those are not available in the community setting and they still don’t address the problem of finding a way to get the patient in a good position or reducing exposure to drainage from an existing pressure sore. Putting a new pillowcase over a bacteria-infested wedge isn’t an effective means of protecting the wound from infection.

When she couldn’t find what she needed, Gwen literally created what she thought was the perfect wedge. She had 3 major requirements – good positioning, pressure relief and antimicrobial.

For several years, Gwen worked on the perfect wedge design, using her brother as her test patient. And finally, her hard work paid off. Gwen designed the BackBone Wedge using her 3 simple principles.

First, the BackBone Wedge allows for easy positioning for both the patient and caregiver. The smooth surface and crescent shape of the BackBone Wedge make it easy to put in position, verify correct positioning, and because the patients don’t feel jammed on their sides, the need to reposition is dramatically reduced. As Gwen’s client Eric notes, “quad pads and other wedges aren’t designed for getting you off your back at all. With the BackBone Wedge, I don’t get thrown to the side and my body does not get twisted like it did with every other wedge out there.”

Second, the BackBone Wedge offloads pressure. The caregiver can literally slide his hand under the BackBone Wedge and feel that there is zero pressure on the pressure sore. This gives the patient and caregiver relief knowing that pressure sores can’t develop and old ones are able to heal.

And third, the BackBone Wedge has an antimicrobial covering, so if the wound does drain, the BackBone Wedge can be easily cleaned and disinfected, without worry of virulent bacteria growing on the material inside the wedge.

The BackBone Wedge has been trialed in hospitals nationally and internationally with great enthusiasm, however Gwen is most excited about the potential impact it will have for families like hers who can’t afford around the clock nurses and an unlimited supply of wedges at their disposal. Patients at home in the community now have access to the top of the line, hospital grade technology that actually prevents pressure sores.

Our employees are very excited to rack up the miles to support the Littlest Tumor Foundation.”

Lubenow Companies Inc deepens its commitment to the community with the new program Hauling for Good. While the company has performed volunteer work and given donations in the past, the next step in the company's commitment is the launch of a new fundraising program that is specifically dedicated to supporting area non-profits. This year, the company has chosen the Littlest Tumor Foundation to benefit from the Hauling for Good program.

The Littlest Tumor Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Appleton, Wisconsin. The team promotes awareness about Neurofibromatosis (NF), and it supports children and families of children with NF. It also supports, advocates, and educates the public on the importance of the Congressionally-Directed Medical Research Program and the research conducted by the National Institutes of Health.
