Undercover cop takes acting skills to the stage

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, February 22, 2020 / — It has just been announced that Singer-songwriter and actor Rodney Fitts will take over the coveted role of 'Gregory' in Timothy Allen Smith’s new stage drama, “Choice.” Fitts will star opposite LA Theatre divas Libby Letlow and Loren Kinsella, in the play that is being hailed as Smith’s best work to-date.

Fitts first burst onto the National stage as a contestant on "X-Factor" and is making his second appearance with Timothy Allen Smith after debuting in the musical, Strength of This Nation in 2018. “Tim’s brilliant, he really is, but working with him can be interesting,” laughs Fitts. “He definitely has his own way of doing things though you can’t argue with the results.”

Smith has been on an incredible roll following the record-breaking success of 2016’s “Love Jones the Musical”. With follow-up hits like “Thugs and The Women Who Love Em” and “Neighborhood Barbershop” he has certainly made his mark in the Urban theatre world but, with “Choice,” he says he’s looking to branch out. “Honestly, I never intended to only tell those kinds of stories. Urban theatre is great but there is so much more in my catalog. I’m really thankful that the commercial success I’ve found is affording me the opportunity to spread my wings a little bit.”

To do that, Smith knows it is critically important to find the right talent. Which is exactly what he feels he’s done casting the former undercover policeman. “Rodney’s unique in that he’s so versatile. When he initially came to audition, I had no idea he could sing. He impressed our team so much with his acting that we were sold on him purely as an actor and it wasn’t until weeks later, during a casual conversation over a break in rehearsal, that he mentioned he sang as well.” Once Smith and team heard him sing, they knew they had found a special talent and knew they wanted to put it to good use. “He has such an interesting background,” says Smith. “The man spent almost a decade as an undercover officer in a major city. I can only imagine the things he’s seen and done.”

Fitts, a third-generation legacy officer, joined the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department in 2007, where he was recruited to work with an elite undercover task force specializing in Human Trafficking and Prostitution. Oddly enough, it was with the Human Trafficking Unit that Rodney fine-tuned his acting skills and developed the itch to perform. After serving honorably for nine years, Rodney made the difficult decision to walk away from the family business and begin to chart his own path. He left Law Enforcement and moved to Los Angeles full time to pursue acting.

Loren Kinsella and Rodney Fitts will begin performances of Choice on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at 8pm, joining Caroline Macou as 'Kim', Cameron Kauffman as 'Michelle,' Angel Davis as "Heather,' Ben Collotta as ‘Brian,’ and Libby Letlow as 'Julie Watson,' in the highly anticipated production at The Matrix Theatre (7657 Melrose Avenue).

Nadrich & Cohen, LLP is filing sex abuse claims against Boy Scouts of America, who filed for bankruptcy last Monday

Boy Scouts of America is creating a victim compensation trust as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, February 22, 2020 / — California personal injury law firm Nadrich & Cohen, LLP is filing sex abuse claims against Boy Scouts of America (BSA), who filed for bankruptcy protection in Delaware last Monday. BSA plans on creating a victim compensation trust through the process of bankruptcy to pay sex abuse victims whose claims are filed by a deadline which has yet to be set.

“We are committed to providing victims of the heinous crime of child sex abuse with the justice they deserve,” said Jeffrey Nadrich, managing partner of Nadrich & Cohen, LLP. “It is important that victims step forward now so their claims can go through bankruptcy court before any deadlines.”

The bankruptcy filing comes shortly after states including California, New Jersey and New York recently allowed more victims to sue BSA for sex abuse. California’s AB 218 law, for example, went into effect in January, gave victims who previously couldn’t sue due to statutes of limitation a three-year “lookback window” to sue and gave victims until the age of 40 or five years after becoming aware of abuse-caused injury to sue.

BSA were already facing mounting sex abuse lawsuits before states recently expanded victims’ options for filing lawsuits. BSA started getting hit hard by lawsuits after media outlets reported on the existence of the “Boy Scout Perversion Files” in 2012. These files are said to contain the names of 7,819 volunteers who have been accused of child sex abuse, as well as the names of 12,254 child sex abuse victims. Only a section of the “Perversion Files” covering a span from 1965 to 1985 has been released to the public thus far.

Some BSA insurers have refused to provide payouts in child sex abuse cases, saying BSA could have prevented the abuse. The “Perversion Files” contain evidence that pressure from local BSA officials allowed alleged child sex abusers to continue to serve in BSA after BSA gained knowledge of child sex abuse allegations against them. The files also demonstrate that around one third of child sex abuse allegations reported to BSA were never forwarded to law enforcement.

A letter in the files referring to a scoutmaster who confessed to child sex abuse involving three children contains a BSA executive writing, “This subject and Scouts were not prosecuted to save the name of Scouting.” Another letter in the files regarding a different case contains a different BSA executive writing, “I would like to let this case drop… one father has threatened legal action which could only injure the Boy Scouts of America. My personal opinion in this particular case is, ‘If it don’t stink, don’t stir it.’”

BSA’s bankruptcy petition lists liabilities of $500 million to $1 billion and assets of $1 billion to $10 billion. BSA may need to sell off some of its assets in order to adequately fund the planned victim compensation trust. BSA’s local councils are responsible for local troops’ everyday operations and were not included in the bankruptcy filing since BSA considers them to be legally separate entities.

Rivera explained that a challenge grant is a significant gift made by a donor or group of donors that allows the receiving institution to replicate and scale the project when others step forward to support the campaign. She added that the Comic Relief US donation is the first challenge match and will be destined toward the construction of Vimenti’s new school building.

To thank Comic Relief US, the Alfond family, and the Peter Alfond Foundation for their donations, Vimenti families and staff hosted a commemorative event at the center, followed by an evening with key supporters of Vimenti. “We recognize the Alfond family’s fundamental contribution to Vimenti, along with the donation from Comic Relief US , which provide opportunities to families who come to the center to raise their goals,” stated Rivera during the Peter Alfond Foundation’s visit to the center.

The Alfond family’s connection with Puerto Rico began in the 1970s when Peter Alfond arrived to the island to lead Pan Am Shoe Company, the Caribbean headquarters of Dexter Shoe Company which his father, Harold, founded in Maine in 1956. Pan Am Shoe Company grew and became a family company manned by Peter as its president for 35 years. While he occupied that post, Peter, his wife and children lived in Puerto Rico, creating strong ties with the island in both business and philanthropy fields. Peter Alfond passed away in 2017. Vimenti is an evidence-based project that uses a two-generation approach (parents and children) and comprises three main pillars to deal with the child poverty issue.
